Anesthesiology PGx Panel

Test Description

The Anesthesiology PGx Panel is intended for individuals undergoing surgical procedures or receiving anesthesia who may benefit from pharmacogenetic-guided medication management. This panel evaluates clinically relevant genetic variants in the BCHE gene associated with altered metabolism of certain anesthetic agents, particularly mivacurium. Individuals with reduced butyrylcholinesterase activity may be at increased risk for prolonged neuromuscular blockade and delayed recovery following administration of mivacurium. Genetic testing may help identify patients at risk for adverse drug reactions and support safer anesthetic planning and medication selection.

Clinical Description

Anesthetic agents and perioperative medications may have variable effects depending on an individual’s genetic profile. Genetic variations can influence drug metabolism, efficacy, and risk of adverse reactions, including prolonged sedation or inadequate analgesia. Pharmacogenetics testing can help guide anesthetic planning and optimize medication selection to improve patient safety and perioperative outcomes.
